The main attraction of International
visitors from all around the world for teaching in China is the
ancient Chinese Civilization which dates back 5000 years ago
keeping her unique culture and tradition still intact. The past
twenty years have witnessed China as one of the fastest growing
countries in the world. One of the most ancient civilizations in
the world, China has been the exotic orient for the western world.
Formerly known as the ‘forbidden’ country it has recreated a
culture which has its ancient fervor as well as is entwined with
the modernity of today’s world with a population of about 1.2
billion people with busy city streets, bustling markets, and many
more thrilling places of visit and has rightfully earned a good
reputation of being at par with the other developed countries as
well. Education in China has been well developed. There are over
2000 universities and colleges, with more than 6 million
enrollments in total. China has a 50-year history of having
foreign students studying in her universities and colleges.
Therefore, the institutions have rich experiences of accommodating
foreign students in China. Out of over 2000 universities and
colleges, more than 300 of them now have foreign students studying
on their campuses. The demand of English Language and English
teachers in China is quite high and the preference of native
English speakers have always been noted. ESL (English as Second
Language) / EFL (English as Foreign Language) teachers are
flocking together in China in response to the great demand for
teaching English there. In China English teachers are a hot
commodity and schools from kindergarten through university want a
foreign face to place in front of their pupils. Along the
well-trod backpacker routes tourists are solicited to stop and
teach for a week, a month, or a year; in large cities, like
Shanghai or Shenzhen, foreigners are often approached about
tutoring or full-time English teaching jobs. ESL / EFL teachers from all
around head to China and settle down for sometime with a teaching
career in places which strike their fancy. The jobs offer extra
facilities like accommodation, sometimes free air fare, medical
allowances, etc. which are reasons, good enough, for captivating
interested teachers to come and teach English in China. ESL jobs
in China are among the top International Jobs which draw-in
English teachers very frequently these days. Most of the ESL
/ TEFL jobs
these days require a TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other
Language) / TEFL ( Teaching English as Foreign language)
Certification as legal proof for being teachers in China. The low
cost of living in China is well another reason for teaching ESL
where one gets paid fairly well coupled with the opportunity to
save and maintain a good way of life there without burning a hole
in your pocket. Beijing, Zhuhai, Shanghai are giving good openings
and opportunities for International Students who want to pursue
English teaching as their profession in International countries.
By the end of 2006, the total number of foreign teachers in China
is 162,695, a 15.3% increase over the year of 2005. These teachers
are from all over the world and teaching at various schools and
organizations in different parts of China. China provides ample
opportunities to the ESL / EFL teachers to come and explore various
parts of the country where teaching for short-time assignments or
on contractual basis can prove beneficial to broaden one’s
professional experience internationally which help in the quick
development of one’s teaching career in the field of ESL / EFL
overseas.
